Mission Statement
Hozhoni Art Studio and Gallery is a non-profit visual arts program where artists with developmental disabilities create, exhibit, sell their artwork, and collaborate with other artists in the Flagstaff community. We seek to provide resources, space, and opportunities for a demographic of artists that has been historically underrepresented in the mainstream and commercial art world.
We facilitate opportunities for education and interaction within the community to heighten awareness and understanding of people with disabilities. Our Art Program includes a variety of artistic mediums including painting, ceramics, textile/fiber arts, illustration, film/new media, and more. We are constantly looking to introduce new and engaging forms of expression to encourage and develop the voices of our artists.
The aim of art is to represent not the outward appearance of things, but their inward significance. ~ Aristotle
About Hozhoni’s Art Gallery & Studio
Hozhoni’s Art Gallery & Studio was founded in 1995, and it has developed into one of the most advanced art programs for artists with developmental disabilities.
The Art Gallery exhibits and sells original artwork by our Hozhoni artists. Our gift shop has prints, clothing, jewelry, mugs and other ceramics, scarves, ties, hats, and greeting cards.
We also provide studio workspaces stocked with art materials and supplies for our artists. We encourage them to experiment with many different mediums to let their creativity flow.
The Hozhoni art program is a brand new adventure for some budding artists. They say it’s fun, and they like being in the studios with all the activities.
Others come into our program with extensive art backgrounds. They teach us! Everyone explores mediums, techniques, and ideas with each other and our staff.
Participants soon discover the exhilarating feeling of success from producing and exhibiting beautiful art for sale to the public in the Art Gallery and other venues.
Visitors are often in awe of the vivid designs and colors in the detailed work presented through the eyes and perceptions of the artist. The work is intriguing, and you may find yourself being drawn into it.
Your purchase of Hozhoni art directly supports the artists. Artists set their own prices based on their hours in the project. They receive 60% of their sales, and 40% goes into the program for materials and costs.
One of our goals has been to get the Hozhoni artists and their art into the public focus and interacting with the local community. Today, we network with museums, galleries, universities, groups, and coalitions through shows, exhibitions, tours, and joint endeavors.
